Independence Day Independence Day of Eritrea is celebrated on May 24. On this day, the country gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. TheNational Military March Band parades on the main thoroughfare. There are displays by the navy, military, air force and the police. New Year's Day in Eritrea
New Year in Eritrea is celebrated by every one with great joy. People wait for this day to come when they throng different restaurants and bars of the country. There is revelry in the streets as well. People wait anxiously for the clock to strike midnight, though the fun starts much earlier.
Ge'ez New YearThe traditional Ge'ez New Year is celebrated on September 10th. Every family celebrates the day by slaughtering sheep or goats and those who are less privileged, a chicken is sacrificed. The people go to their relatives and friends in the afternoon. Gifts are exchanged along with the exchange of pleasantries. This is one of the festivals in Eritrea which is celebrated with great pomp.
K'ddus TohannesThe feast of K'ddus Tohannes is celebrated on the eve of Ge'ez New Year. Self made torches are made in the old Sembel and children set fire to them. They run on the streets with the burning torches, and shout and sing aloud. Believers step across the torches three times forward and three times backward for getting the blessings. People give coins to children at this time.
