Estonia is a region in the northern end of Europe. The countries of Latvia and Russia lie on each side of the region. This country is positioned on the eastern end of the Baltic Sea. Estonia is a famous international tourist destination and a lot of tourists visit the place throughout the year.
History of Estonia
Estonia was initially under the Swedish control and then it was handed over to Russia. During the nineteenth century the cultural renaissance began in the region which resulted in the establishment of the literature, language, music, theater of the country. This awakening spilled over to the political sphere as well and it resulted in the demand for greater autonomy and complete independence from Russia. There was the Estonian liberation war against Russia in which Estonia defeated Russia. The country then remained independent for 22 years. The country was however again brought under soviet control in 1940. The Russian position though was not recognized by the other countries. The country finally got independence in 1991.
Geography of Estonia
The country is placed at the northern end of the temperate climate zone. The Atlantic Ocean and the north Atlantic stream have an influence on the climate of the region. The presence of the Gulf Stream has however led to the region having a milder climate. February is the coldest month of the year with a temp of -5.2 degrees while July is the hottest month with 18 degrees. There are huge deposits of limestone and oil shale in Estonia. There are more than 1500 lakes in the country. There are some large rivers too that flow through the country. There are quite a few bogs and long stretches of coastline with bays, inlets and straits. There are almost 1550 islands and islets in the region.
Demographics of Estonia
Estonians belong to the Finnic ethnic group. Ethnic Estonians make up more than 70% of the total population. There are a sizeable number of immigrants as well. There are Russian speaking minorities. There is also a small portion of the population who are of Finnish descent. The official language of the region is Estonian. Another language that is widely spoken is Russian.
Culture of Estonia
The music of the Estonians takes the form of ballads, epic legends and work songs. The musical instruments that are generally used are zither, concertina, accordion and fiddle.
