Valjala Church, Valjala
The Valjala Church is also known as Saint Martin's Church. It is one of the oldest churches of Estonia. The Valjala Church is situated in the Valjala Commune that is around 25 kilometers from Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa. The structure was completed only after the conquest of 1227. First of all, a stone chapel was erected in Valjala. The walls of this chapel formed the lower part of the Valjala church choir. On the southern side of the chapel, a vestry could be seen. After the construction was completed, the chapel was decorated with murals. In 1240, real construction of Valjala Church started. During that period, the original chapel was transformed into a choir. In the beginning, a Romanesque style was maintained in the church. As a result, all entrances to the Valjala Church, Valjala were made round-arched.
Poide Church, Saaremaa
The Poide Church is one of the most well known churches in Estonia. It is also known as St. Mary's church. Due to the size and massiveness of the Poide Church, it looks more like a castle. Poide Church in Saaremaa is closely associated with the fortification of the island during the Middle Ages. It is one of the main churches in Estonia. Earlier, there was a chapel on its southern side. The wall of the chapel's two-bayed nave forms part of the present Poide Church. The remains of the chapel's round-arched Romanesque portals can be found on the northern and southern sides of the church. This is the most unique feature of Poide Church, Saaremaa. During the Soviet occupation in 1940, Poide Church, Saaremaa became a storehouse for the Soviet army.
Haapsalu Castle, Haapsalu
The Haapsalu Castle also comes under the category of churches in Estonia. It was built as the primary residence of the Bishop of Saare-Laane. The castle dates back to the 13th century. The Haapsalu Castle in Haapsalu is attached with a Dome church.
