Geography of Estonia

The Geography of Estonia has several interesting features. The country is positioned in the northern end of the temperate climate zone. It is in the transition zone between continental and maritime climate. The country is positioned on the eastern end of the Baltic Sea. This is located between 21.5 degrees and 28.1 degrees east and 57.3 degrees and 59.5 degrees north. The average elevation stretches to almost 50 meters. Some of the features of the Geography of Estonia are:

There are huge deposits of limestone and oil shale in the region. This covers nearly 47% of the country. There are close to 1400 lakes in the region which you can sight while you travel around the country. There are some large rivers that flow through the region as well. Some of the large rivers that drain the region include Poltsamaa, Vohandu, and Parnu. There are also many bogs in the region. There are long stretches of coastline and many bays, inlets and straits in Estonia. There are over 1500 islets and islands in the country. The two islands are Hiiumaa and Saaremaa.

One of the important features of the Geography of Estonia is that the average annual temperature of the region is around 5 degree C. The presence of the Gulf Stream has however resulted in the region having a milder climate in spite of it being in the northern latitude. The temperature drops to -5.2 degrees Celsius in February which is the coldest month in the year. The temperature reaches 18 degrees Celsius in the month of July which is the hottest month in the year. An important point of the Geography of Estonia is that the Atlantic Ocean also influences the climate to a large extent. The Icelandic minimum and the north Atlantic stream too have a impact on the climate of the region. The Icelandic minimum is a region where the air pressure is lower than in the neighboring areas.

An important feature of the Geography of Estonia is that the country is located in the humid zone. The amount of precipitation here is more than the total evaporation. There are close to 150 rainy days in a year. The western slopes of Haanja Uplands and Sakala receive the maximum precipitation. There is snow fall in the south eastern end of the country. It usually stretches from December to March.
