Wildlife in Fiji

Wildlife in Fiji involves various types of fauna which are found in different parts of the country. Wildlife in Fiji not only deals with the commonly found animals but also with some endangered species of animals.Fiji Wildlife thrives mainly on the huge forest reserves i.e about eight-hundred-and-fifty thousand hectares of natural forests. The forests comprise large areas of hardwood trees including sandalwood and kauri. The rain forests cover much of the large islands owned by the local clans. These forests are used by multinationals and locals for growing trees and vegetation that have medicinal value.

One of the most important features of the Wildlife in Fiji is the Bird life. There are about 100 species of birds in Fiji. The most important region where varieties of birds can be found is the island of Viti Levu. The rainforests along the coral coast and Pacific Harbor are considered to be the best places for different varieties of birds. Masked parrots can also be found in Kadavu which is a large rain forested island in the Southern Islands.

Unique species of fantails and honeyeaters are also found here. Taveuni which is located in the Northern Islands has a distinct bird life which includes parrots and lorikeets. Endangered species of birds such as silk tails can be found in the south eastern region of Vanua Levu. Some of the islands in Fiji have been earmarked for nesting boobies. The main regions falling under this category are the 45-hectare Namenalala Island off Mabualau near Toberua Island in Lomaiviti, Bird Island off Vatulele in the Southern Islands, Hatana Island and the Vanua Levu in the Northern Islands.

Qamea, a large volcanic island off Taveuni in the Northern Islands is a good spot for exploration of wild life and bird watchingWildlife in Fiji also includes a wide variety of land animals. Among them the most important are the tiny gecko, large land crabs, mongoose and the giant toad. Among the notable species, the banded iguana deserves special mention. They are found on the Yaduataba Island off Vanua Levu The iguanas change color to regulate their internal heat and closely resemble the related iguanas found in South America. Among other animals, the tree frogs are also found in the rainforests of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau and Taveuni. Among the snakes, the Boa snake is sometimes seen in the rainforests.
