Wildlife in Sigatoka is rich and varied. Fiji boasts of 850,000 hectares of natural forests and large areas of hardwood trees including Sandalwood and Kauri. Most of the larger islands are covered by rainforest which feature 2000 indigenous plant species, several beautiful bird species and a few land animals too. Among the reptile species, the 2 species of small iguanas are the most interesting -- the endemic crested iguana and the more common banded iguana which is closely related to those found in South America. The crested iguana is mostly found on Yaduataba Island off Vanua Levu which is home to these small iguanas. You can also find them seen on nearby islands like Nananu-i-Ra and Muake off northern Viti Levu, several of the larger Yasawa Islands and on Monuriki and Monu in the Mamanucas. The banded iguana is common throughout Fiji. You will find them in the wild hiding among Ivy trees where its uniform green color blends in to its surroundings.
Sigatoka Wildlife also includes 28 reptile species. It includes 3 species of frogs - the common cane toad imported from South America to combat cane beetles and the tree frog found in the rainforest of highlands Viti Levu. Also, there are 10 geckos, 12 skinks and 3 species of snakes. The harmless Boa snake is seldom seen but revered amongst Fijians as a god.There are over 100 species of birds in Fiji. The main island of Viti Levu, especially around the rainforests along the coral coast and Pacific Harbour, has several species of birds. You will find a number of stunning musk parrots and unique species of fantails and honeyeaters in Kadavu. Taveuni in the Northern Islands has a diverse bird life including parrots and lorikeets.
