The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatokaos situated on the west side o fthe mouth of the Sigatoka River, which is the second largest river in the whole of Fiji. The Dunes are the result of fluvial erosion and coastal dune formation process in the coastal hinterland. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka extends along the Coral Coast of Viti Levu to Naqarai BAy with a distance of approximaely 5 km.
The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka covers an area of 650 hectares and has many parabolic sand dunes of different ages and activities. Beneath this sand accumulation are the archaeological remains which spans the Fijian prehistory right from early Lapita settlement to the historic times. There are clear visibility of pottery scatter, humab remains, stone tools and other archaeological remains wihch are continually been uncovered. The excavations here indicated the stratigraphical separated occupation floors which are associated with the Plain ware of Figi and the Navatu phase components, dating back to 450-550 C.E. and 550-650 C.E., found by radioactive dating.
As the coastal margin of the dune field is getting heavily eroded and slip slope faces as well as blowout surfaces are showing up, the remains are getting exposed continually and in many cases destroyed. There have been many archaeological projects that have been undertaken at Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka over the past half century.
The vegetation here is of native forest and there are herbaceous communities.
