The Stadium Foundation was established in 1927, with the first and foremost task of getting a stadium built to permit Helsinki to host the Summer Olympics. The construction of the building began on February 12, 1934, and was inaugurated on June 12, 1938. The Olympic Stadium is administrated by the Stadium Foundation.
A key person in the stadium-foundation was Erik von Frenckell. As the first chairman of the foundation he has been the most distinguished sports director in the history of Finland. He led the company from 1927 to 1977. After him the foundations executive committee was lead by Victor Procope (1978-1988). Ulla Gyllenberg was the chairman from 1989 to 1992 and the present incumbent Erkki Aurejarvi assumed post in 1993.
Since its completion the Stadium has undergone eight important stages of development. In 1990 to 1994, the most important modernization was carried out. In 1952, the Stadium could accommodate about 70, 000 spectators. Today, after the renovation, the stadium has a capacity of 40, 000 all of which are seats.
The Stadium arena has been described as the most beautiful in the world. It is the product of an architectural competition. The most important events organized in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium were the XVth Olympic Games, 19th July to 3rd August, 1952.
About 70,435 spectators attended the opening of the Olympic Games. The spectator record has ever since remained unmatched. In the entire year 1952, there were altogether 850, 000 spectators in the stadium.
The Stadium Building is 243 meters long and about 159 meters wide. The tower is 72 meters high. The Stadium covers 4.9 hectares. The Municipality of Helsinki, the Ministry of Education and the central sports organizations are represented in the Board of the Foundation.
