The original theater was built in this spot in the year 1827. This theater was replaced by a new one in 1886 after the wooden building burnt down. It was designed by the Russian architect Nicholas Benois. Today, the red-and-gold decor with its lovely boxes and columns is still as it was in Benois's day. The exterior of the building was restored and refurbished under the supervision of architects Jarl Eklund and Eero Saarinen in 1936.
The building and its surrounding shops, statues and park form a relaxing area in the city center. To the east of the Theater are a sculptural group constructed by G. Finne, 1932. It was built in memory of the Swedish-Finnish poet Zachris Topelius. There is also a bronze statue built by Lauri Leppanen, 1953 commemorating the Finnish poet Eino Leino.
The great hall of the theater can accommodate about 500 people, whereas the small hall about 100 people at a time. The Swedish theater is known for its performances of classical drama as well as its musical repertoire. The shows staged here transcend the language barrier 80,000 to 100,000 people who attend performances in this theater yearly.
The theater remains open from 12 pm to 6 pm on Monday and from Tuesday to Saturday it is open from 12 pm to7 pm.
