Transportation in Helsinki

Transportation in Helsinki is quite economic as the fares are quite reasonable. Transportation in Helsinki involves travel by buses, trams, cars, taxis and train.

All the major public transportation except the suburban trains operates under the HKL transport system while the regional transport system which connects Helsinki to Espoo and Vantaa are operated by the YTV system. In Helsinki, four types of ticket systems are followed:

Tram Ticket: This ticket is valid for one hour and can be transferred a lot of times.

City Ticket: This ticket is valid only within the city limits and this also can be transferred a number of times.

Regional ticket: This ticket is valid for an hour and a half and can be used within and between Epoo, Helsinki, Vantaa and Kauniainen. This ticket can be transferred a lot of times.

Full region ticket: A regional ticket that covers regional places like Kerava and Kirkkonummi.

It is to be noted that the city ticket allows a traveler to travel by any mode of transportation i.e by buses, trams, cars, and taxis but only within the boundaries of Helsinki excluding long distance trains and buses. Fares can be paid by cash or by travel card. This is a reloadable smart card which can be purchased from kiosks or from any HKL outlets. The card also gives a discount to the travelers.

Alternatively the tourist can also purchase the Helsinki card and HKL tourist ticket both of which offer unlimited travel within the city for a fixed period.

Transportation in Helsinki by tram: This is considered to be the most convenient means of travel. Helsinki has an extensive tram network especially the line 3T and 3B service, which is just opposite to 3T in direction.

Transportation in Helsinki by bus: The bus service in Helsinki almost covers the entire city. The two main stations for the north and east bound buses are located on the two squares adjacent to the railway station. The buses which follow a route towards the west operate from the underground station in the Kampi center.

Transportation in Helsinki by metro: There is a long metro line from the eastern suburbs to the center of the city. This service has proved to be very useful to the commuters and after crossing the Itakescus, the line gets split into two.
