Holidays in Finland

After becoming an independent nation the Finnish government declared the national and the public holidays in Finland. In Finland the Western Calendar and the Protestant tradition is followed. Holidays in Finland have been planned keeping the festivities and ceremonies in mind. All the official holidays in Finland are sanctioned by the Parliament.

The official holidays in Finland are divided further into Christian and non–Christian holidays. Finland earned its independence on 6th December in 1994. Therefore the 6th of December every year is celebrated as Independence Day. It is an official holiday. Apart from this there is a holiday on May Day or the Laborers’ day.

Besides these there are several Christian holidays in Finland. The main holidays are:

  • Epiphany – 6th of January
  • Ascension Day- 24th of May
  • All Saints Day – 5th of November
  • Christmas December – 25th of December
There is also a Midsummer holiday in Finland. New Year is also celebrated with great gusto in Finland.

Christmas is one of the biggest festival seasons in the country. Holidays begin on the 23rd of December. Celebrations reach there peak on the Christmas Eve and the Christmas day. It is a time for the traditional Christmas feast and Father Christmas or Santa. The holiday is extended to 26th of December. This is also a public holiday as it marks the birth centenary of St. Stephen.

In addition to these holidays every Sunday is a holiday. It was made a holiday keeping in mind the Christmas norms and the tradition of visiting the Church every Sunday. However, after the act of Parliament there were set rules about the standard working hours. The original weekly working hours were reduced to 40 and Saturdays as a result became de facto holidays. Since eater falls on a Sunday and so does Pentecost sometimes the Saturday preceding it is declared to be an official holiday.

Incase official holidays overlap the preceding days are considered holidays as well. Sometimes necessary adjustments and the holidays are shifted. However this is true for some of the holidays. For the other holidays the people get to enjoy an extra working day as a holiday.
