Weather in Finland

Weather in Finland varies considerably. This is because the Arctic Circle runs through Finland dividing it into north and south. While the north lies in the region above the Arctic Circle the southern part lies below. So the north of Finland experiences a sub-arctic climate and the rest of the land enjoys a northern temperate climate. In fact it is the geographical position that makes the Weather in Finland so unique.

Finland lies between the 70th and the 60th Northern Parallels in the Eurasians coastal region. So the Weather in Finland is a combination of maritime and continental climate. The climate varies with the change in direction of the wind flow. It has been observed that the mean temperature in Finland is comparatively higher to the neighboring regions which lie on the same latitude. This difference in the Finland weather is the result of the influence of the Baltic Sea, inland waters the sea winds from the Atlantic. These winds in turn are warmed when they flow over the Gulf Stream before entering the Finland mainland.

Weather in Finland is fluctuating but pleasant. When westerly winds blow over the land the weather in the rest of the land is warmer and clear. This is the effect of the ‘föhn’ phenomenon caused by the Keel range. The ocean currents have a considerable moderating influence on the climate of the land. Despite that the Asian climate extends to this part of Europe. During summers the temperatures are extremely high and in winters the temperature falls below freezing point.

Finland is situated in the region where the tropical air masses and the polar air masses meet and as a result during winters there is a sudden change in the temperature sometimes. Finland lies in the mid point between the low pressure zone and the high pressure zone. Naturally the climate in Finland changes diurnally. According to Köppen's climate classification, Finland falls completely under the temperate coniferous-mixed forest zone with cold, wet winters.

Winter lasts pretty long in Finland, beginning in November and extending till mid-March. Summers are relatively shorter but the temperatures are warm and slowly with the advent of spring and autumn the temperature becomes milder. There is snow from mid-October to mid May. There is occasional rainfall but the humidity level is rather low.
