Tough the locals speak many languages but the official language of the region is French. But according to the Language policy of the country compels its citizens to communicate only in French.

It is mandatory that commercial advertisements should come out in official language of France. But non-commercial publications given out by the private individuals or corporations can come out in any language.

The government of the country recognizes 75 languages in France which include 24 languages are European in nature and the rest 51 are from various regions like Caribbean, South Asian and South American.

The country is trying to promote its regional languages in France via means of education. Bilingual teachers are being recruited in the popular French public schools also students are encouraged to take up an additional regional language along with their studies.

Along with French several other cross-border languages in France like Basque, Dutch, Franco-Provençal, Occitan Catalan, Picard, Norman, and others are also popular. Some of the languages also enjoy official status. In short French is the official language of France but due to mass immigration of people from all parts of the world several languages are spoken in the region.
