Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum in Paris is one of the most famous and oldest museums and art galleries of France and the world. Known as Musee de Louvre in French, this museum is home to the world of art of a number of world famous painters and artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt.




The Louvre was originally a fortress built in the 13th century by King Philip II Augustus. However as the years passed, it became the grand palace of Sun King, Louis XIV. This monument, designed by Pierre Lescot, is a fantastic example of renaissance architecture. Over the years extensions were added to this palace and in 1793 the first state museum of Louvre called the Museum Central des Arts was opened to the public. The major rooms that were opened include Grande Galerie and Salon Carre. The different wings of the palace, which were renovated and converted into art galleries and museums, include the Richelieu Wing, Claude Perrault's easterm wing and others. Anne of Austria's apartment was also converted into room, which housed ancient sculptures.

The Louvre Museum has an extensive display of royal paintings and sculptures. The museums also has a wide display of Oriental or ancient Mesopotamian antiquities, Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman antiquities, middle ages sculptures, antique furniture and paintings representing the different European schools. In fact, the museum has a total of 35000 artistic displays belonging to eight major departments. The museum also has a separate section for Islamic art. Major paintings found here include Mona Lisa, Madonna on the Rocks, The Condottiero, The Wedding at Cana, Portrait of Louis XIV and others. Famous sculptures that one can find over here include Venus de Milo, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Aphrodite, Lady of Auxerre and others. Other artistic and exquisite displays include The Seated Scribe, Law Code of Hammurabi, Frieze of Archers, an ornamental wardrobe and others.

The biggest feature of this grand museum is the Louvre Pyramid. Built in the year 1989, this huge glass structure adorns the entrance of the museum. Another feature is the Pyramid Inversee or Inverted Pyramid. This is a skylight which is located in an underground shopping mall and is one of th most striking features found in Louvre.

Visiting the Louvre Museum is not difficult at all. It can be easily accessed by any mode of communication in Paris. It is open on all days except Tuesdays. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Entry is free on the forts Sunday of every month. One has to purchase tickets to enter the museum. The museum has all the facilities that allow the disabled travelers to easily access the museum.
