Birougou National Park, Gabon is one of the two parks where the widespread sun-tailed guenon that was first illustrated in the year 1988 can be found. The Birougou National Park, Gabon was created in 2002 in order to protect the 690 square kilometers of montane rain forest in the Chaillu Massif. It is also one of the most sought after spots of sightseeing in the country.
The Birougou National Park is well known for conserving a sector of the Chaillu Massif Pleistocene refuge. This area has never been subjected to the industrial classification. Birougou National Park is known for its preserved rainforests which is home to a wide variety of wildlife like species of reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
This National park is one of the most diverse rain forests in Gabon and has undertaken recent researches on butterflies in the adjacent Congolese part of the Chaillu Massif. This project has established Birougou's amazing biodiversity.
In the colonial and pre colonial time, the whole of Chaillu Massif area was inhabited and was covered with villages. On this date, no permanent settlement exists within Birougou National Park. The local people staying in the villages that are situated in the periphery of the parks are essentially engaged in the conservation of Birougou Park.
Just like other parks there are also some important threats to this park which are the cause of major concern. The survival use of the park's resources by the population that is situated adjacent to the Birougou has an impact on the ecological integrity of this conserved area.
There are various types of WCS Activities that is undertaken in this national park and they are:-
- It provides a comprehensive training program for park staff, future managers, park rangers, and also the outreach personnel.
- It aims at the development of temporary headquarters in Mbigou.
