History of the city tells us that the Mpongwé tribe settled the land much before the French seized the area in the year 1839. The city came into being in the year 1843 as a trading station. A fort, known as fort d'Aumale was built to trade the slaves to and from the city. The liberated slaves were sent there from the ship L'Elizia, and in the year 1848 it was called Libreville (literally meaning "Freetown" in French). It was the principal port of French Equatorial Africa between the years-1934 to 1946 and was the centre of the Battle of Gabon in the year 1940.

The city has made rapid progress since its time of independence and is now home to a substantial population.
