Culture of Germany

Culture of Germany is a conglomeration of many facets which includes the literature, food, music and especially the arts and religion of the region. Any country's identity is determined by the culture that is inherent to it and the moment you hear a familiar tune, see a typical carving or taste a unique cuisine you know from its distinctness to which country it belongs. All these are also the ingredients that constitute the Culture of Germany.

Germany has always been the center for the intellectuals and German literature and philosophy are intrinsic to the culture of the land. Walther von der Vogelweide and Wolfram von Eschenbach are among the earliest authors whose works created quite a wave during the Middle Ages. Even the lovely fairytales that entertain children and amuse adults and have earned a recognition world wide were penned by the brothers Grimm. Indeed literature has influenced the culture of Germany very much.

German poets and authors namely Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Kleist, Hoffmann, Brecht and Schmidt are still household names. Many of the German authors have bagged the Nobel Prize too which Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, Heinrich Böll and Günter Grass. The theories of the German philosophers Kant, Leibniz, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Gadamer have made a global impact. Marx and Engels redefined society and administered equality through their communist theory.

Music is as much a part of the German culture as literature. Who is not acquainted with the soulful cadence of Beethoven's piano. From classic to rock Germany has graduated slowly and surely in the field of music. Culture cannot be discussed with the exception of art especially when the culture in Germany comes into question.

The German gothic architectural styles are also emblematic of the arts practiced here. It was roughly during the Renaissance and afterwards that German artists specialized in the Baroque style of painting. Carolingian and Ottonian styles which were the roots of the Romanesque style of architecture also made a significant impact on the architecture of the land. Cinema too was not a mere agent of entertainment rather it was an art-form that explored the surrealist genre to the fullest. It reflected the culture of Germany and the Nazi trauma that the natives suffered.

Roman Catholicism as well as Protestantism thrived in Germany. Martin Luther was instrumental in popularizing the Protestant religion. Religion had a definite contribution to the culture of the place. Food also plays a major role in giving form to the culture of Germany.
