Architecture in Germany

Architecture of Germany has been primarily influenced by the Gothic, Ottonian and the Carolingian styles. Many of the ancient buildings epitomize the intricacies and skill of the genre they represent. Modern day German architecture is a culmination of the definitive styles which are representative of the individual schools. The exemplary styles have been adopted by the later artists and they have helped in defining the Architecture in Germany.

Some of the buildings that are living statements of the artistic brilliance are the Aachen Cathedral, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Einstein Tower, Freising Library, Hunting Lodge, and many more. UNESCO declared the Aachen Cathedral as a World Heritage site. This Palatine chapel, with its octogonal basilica and cupola is a real delight to see. Built during the regime of Emperor Charlemagne this reflects the early Romanesque intricacies.

Erich Mendelsohn's small, but powerfully modeled tower was built to symbolize the greatness of the Einsteinian concepts. It is one of the best examples of the innovative architecture of Germany. This house was structured in such a way that it could hold the astronomical instruments that Einstein used himself. People often refer to it as the "sarcophagus of architectural Expressionism". This remarkable piece of architecture in Germany is the pride of the country and a landmark creation in the history of the architecture of the 20th century.

Architecture in Germany has been considerably based on the Gothic genre. The region produced many significant works in these styles. The memorial buildings and the chapels echo the distinct and towering pillars, tunnels and basements and most strikingly the looming arches. The Bauhaus movement identified with Walter Gropius also fairly influenced the architectural patterns in the country. Some of the other important architectural buildings in the country are:

  • Olympic tent
  • Museum of decorative arts
  • Neuschwanstein Castle

In fact the whole country is dotted with such buildings.
