Mount Wasserkuppe, Germany is a plateau, which translates into water peak in German. Germany Tourist Attractions like the Wasserkuppe attract a number of visitors. Mount Wasserkuppe in Germany is the highest peak in the Rhon Mountains within the state of Hesse. Between the World Wars, great developments were made in Mount Wasserkuppe in sailplane development. As early as 1911, students from the Darmstadt Technical University began flying gliders from here.The people's interest in gliding in Germany increased after 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles restricting the production or usage of powered aircraft in Germany. 1920 onwards, annual gliding competitions were conducted. Records were set and broken for distance, height and duration of un-powered engine flight. The first competition was organized by Oskar Ursinus. He also built the first clubhouse on the Mount Wasserkuppe, Germany in 1924 to restore the shipping containers that was used as accommodation enthusiasts.

By 1930, the gliding competition had become an international event, drawing pilots from all over the Continent and the United States. The Wasserkuppe Glider Museum is located right on Mount Wasserkuppe, Germany. This is a mecca for gliding enthusiasts. The museum is home to fascinating exhibits on the history of gliding, and even houses some real gliders. The Kinder-Akademie is a children's museum in Fulda. It is a must for the kids who can also learn about the interrelations between technology, art, science, and culture through the interactive exhibits.

In the 1970s, the newer sport of hang gliding has found a home in the Mount Wasserkuppe, Germany. Following the German reunification and demise of the Soviet Union, the radar installations and surveillance were removed in the 1990s. The new exhibit hall in the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum or the German Sailplane Museum was formed in 1970, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first competition.
