If you want to experience the thrill and some adventure you can travel hitch-hiking. If you want to explore the city you are in you can use the tram, Tube and the bus service of that city. The service is cheaper and reliable. If you get late at some place the night buses network will take you to your destination. It is always cheaper alternative than the taxi.In many cities cycling is encouraged by the civic department. There are designated bicycle lanes on the road. You can carry your bicycle on the train as well so it is the most convenient way to explore a new city.
