There are public buses from Accra / Kumasi /tamale which are cheap and are safer than the rash driving private bus drivers. The time taken to reach Bolgatanga is around 3 hours from tamale. It leaves around 8 am and it is a wise idea to go for the washroom while stopping for the lunch. This is because one won't find a better chance later. Bolgatanga is the last big city in Ghana before crossing the border at Paga.
Bolgatanga is the hub for travelers coming from the south of Ghana and traveling to Burkina Fasso and also Mali and Senegal. There are three different stations for Bolgatanga. The first is the place where you come as you are traveling to Bolga by Tro-Tro. This is the main station of the city and one can get transport to the south as well as the north places like Paga,Sirigu and Tongo. The second station is near t the Tro-Tro station and is housed inside an abandoned stadium. One will get the orange MEtro-Mass bus leving and coming here. The third is a station on the south of the city. One will find taxis leaving for the inside destinations of the city. There are Transportation in Bolgatanga to almost anywhere.
