Getting to Elmina should no longer be a cause of concern for the foreign travelers. The town of Elmina is fairly accessible from outside. Road travel is the best way of Getting to Elmina.
Elmina is a two-hour car trip from the city of Accra. It lies on the coastal highway heading west. From the trans-continental highway, three junctions lead to the Elmina town. All the three roads link the main access road, the High Street. Other roads from here lead to the rest of the town.
Driving a car by renting one is an option to reach Elmina. But it is quite difficult to arrange for a car as rental mode of transport has not caught up with this part of Ghana. Guests can avail taxis to reach Elmina. One can make the trip by a cab for a negotiable fee of around $35 to $40.
Driving in Ghana is fraught with risks. Most of Ghana's major highways are generally in good condition. But one needs to be ware of accidents caused by speeding vehicles. The major risks are brightly painted bush taxis. The drivers of these taxis follow no speed limits. They usually speed away without hesitation or a clear sight of what lies ahead. From the central coastal region and westward one also needs to watch out for trucks carrying along carrying huge logs from upland timber regions.
State Transport Corporation buses also ply to Elmina. At $2 a person, they are the least convenient but cheapest option of getting to Elmina. The buses to Elmina leave from the Accra's central station.
The best time of the year to visit is July through September or November and December. This is after the rainy season which lasts from April to June and October and before the harmattan, a dry dusty wind that blows in from the interior. February to April is the hottest time of the year. Major hotels charge about $60 a day for parking a car with a driver.
