Transport for passengers and goods in Elmina, is provided by buses, mummy trucks and taxis. There are two passenger terminals in Elmina. They are at the Victoria Square and Mpoben-Fish Landing Market. From here passengers board vehicles to Accra, Takoradi, Cape Coast and other neighboring towns and villages.
Tro Tro is a popular form of transportation in Elmina. This typically Ghanaian mode of transport is cheap and fast. Tro Tro resembles a small mini-bus. It works just like a shared taxi. The Tro Tro departs only when it is completely full. In this bus, at least 18 people are packed in. When full it is bursting at the seams and leaves no space for passenger movement at all. It is not at all comfortable. Travel in such buses always involves a lot of jostling.
At Chapel Square, in the centre of the city, there is a taxi stand. When a tourist gets there, the drivers invariably try to offer an exclusive taxi first. This is 10 times more expensive. A shared taxi ride is not at all pinching.
The roads of Elmina are mostly congested. The roads are very narrow without pedestrian walkways as well cycle lanes. In effect, vehicles, cyclist, pedestrians and other road users compete with each other for space.
The vehicles that provide public transportation are mostly privately owned. The largest number of vehicles belongs to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union. The partly privatized State Transport Company has its nearest bus terminal at Cape Coast. The Accra-Takoradi service does stop at Elmina on demand.
Due to the increased number of visitors in the town the volume of traffic in Elmina has increased over the years. Although the use of motor vehicles is on the increase, air pollution is not yet a major problem in Elmina. Random hooting of horns by drivers is, however a big nuisance in Elmina.
