Festivals in Ghana



Celebrating Festivals in Ghana is an integral part of the Ghana culture. Festivals in Ghana differs from place to place and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fun.

Festivals in Ghana includes several rites and rituals which are performed throughout the year in different regions of the country.Some of the rites and rituals are related to child-birth, rights of passage, puberty, marriage and death. The celebrations are usually attended by all the family members from the entire village.The elder members of each group make it a point to see that each rites are performed well and are strictly followed.

Among the major festivals in Ghana the Panefast festival deserves mention. The festival is held during summer each year. The main objective of this festival is to celebrate the traditions and Ghanaian roots.People from all over Ghana as well as African-Americans with roots in Ghana visit the country during this time to celebrate the heritage.

Another important festival which is largely celebrated is the Homowo Festival. The word Homowo means "hooting at hunger".This festival is celebrated in the memory of the famine which occurred long time back in the Accra plains.During this time there was practically no rainfall and lack of sea water led to a disastrous famine.Many people died due to hunger.Later on when food became plentiful, the people celebrated the event.

The Kobine festival is another important festival among the Festivities in Ghana.This is a traditional dance festival which is celebrated in the Lawra area of north western Ghana.The festival is celebrated during the months of September and October to mark the end of a successful harvest.

Another important festival of Ghana is the Dodoleglime festival.The festival is celebrated during the month of November and is celebrated by the chiefs and people of the Hohoe District of the Volta Region.This festival is celebrated to mark the incident which occurred during the 17th century , when the people of this region got freed from the tyrannical rule of Togbe Agorkoli of Notsie

During this time an important event occurred, when the people who were held as captives secretly escaped through a hole they dug in the wall that was built to contain the subjects of Togbe Agorkoli.
