Ghana or Republic of Ghana is a West African country. Ghana is bordered by Ivory Coast to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
The word Ghana means "Warrior King" and is used to refer to refer the west African coast. During pre-colonial times the place was inhabited by a large number of ancient kingdoms including the Ga Adangbes on the eastern coast, inland Empire of Ashanti and various Fante states along the coast. During the 15th century trade and commerce started flourishing with the European states after the place came into contact with the Portuguese. The British established a colony in this place in the year 1874.
Ghana received its independence in the year 1957 from the United Kingdom and the new name(Ghana) was chosen for the new nation formed.
Ghana is rich in natural resources and has twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa.Being a poor nation Ghana is dependent on the western countries for financial and technical assistance.The main sources of foreign exchange comes from Gold, timber, cocoa, diamond, bauxite, and manganese exports.Recently an oilfield having a huge capacity of light has ben discovered in this place.
The domestic economy of Ghanam heavily relies on agriculture accounting 50% of GDP and employs 85% of the work force,Rising public sector wages and regional commitments have led to the inflation of Ghana.Inspite of all this , Ghana still remains as one of the economically sound countries of Africa.
The Ghana Cedi (GH¢) is the official currency of the country. Among the taxes levied the Vat or the Value Added Tax is administered in Ghana.

Many types of languages (about 100) and dialects are used and spoken in Ghana while English is regarded as the official language.The language is widely used in all the government and business affairs.
Two types of languages can be found in Ghana.One that is spoken by the members of the Kwa family and are found to the south of Volta river while the other spoken by the members of Gur family are found to the north
