Independence Square, Accra



The Independence Square, Accra is famous in the history of Ghana and is counted among the topmost tourist attractions in Accra. According to historical records three men were shot by the army when they wanted to show their grievances to the Governor. The Independence Square, Accra was built in the year 1961 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Independence Square boasts of two famous monuments and they are known as Independence Arch and the Independence Monument. You can see the grand Gulf of Guinea from the Independence Square in Accra. It is said that the Independence Square has the capacity to accommodate 30,000 people at a time. You will notice an arch which forms the backdrop of the square and a black star is put on the top of the arch. This black star is the symbol of African freedom and has been there indicating the struggle of the Africans against the colonizers.

If you look around you will find the "Eternal Flame of African Liberation". This is known as a sign of liberty and it is known that it was first lit by Kwame Nkrumah. It was a reminder for all that freedom is priceless and it was the effort of many centuries that Ghana was free of all oppression. The architecture of the Independence Square, Accra is one of the most important features of the monument. A little away from the Independence Monument one can find the Independence Arch. Beside the Independence Arch one can notice the tomb of a soldier.

His name was not written but he is believed to be a freedom fighter. In March 2007 the people of Accra celebrated the 50th anniversary of independence of the West African nations. As Ghana is one of the first African countries to come out from the subjugation of the British colonizers the people of Ghana celebrate this event with enthusiasm and gusto. The Independence Square, Accra stands as a perfect symbol of all the bloodshed and fight of the people against the colonizers. The Independence Square shows the indomitable spirit of the people of Ghana and their love for the motherland.
