The travelers coming to the city always try to visit National Museum, Accra which is the oldest as well as the largest Ghana museums. The National Museum, Accra is managed by the administration of Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. The National Museum in Accra was officially opened in the year 1957 on the 5th of March by the Late Princess Marina, Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Kent. The National Museum, one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions in Accra houses objects related to ethnography, fine arts along with archaeology.
All the exhibits are surely going to attract your attention as they reflect the rich cultural heritage of the country. The archaeological objects which you will get to see comprise those belonging to the stone age period down to those of the recent historical past. The art gallery which is small yet impressive houses contemporary paintings of the Ghanaian artists and are done in pastel, watercolors, acrylic, oil paints along with collages. The permanent ethnological exhibits comprise indigenous musical instruments, traditional textiles, chief's regalia, pottery, stools, beads and gold-weights. Objects from other countries of Africa were brought here on exchange basis and they include Zulu wooden figures, Senfu masks from La Cote and colorful beads-ware form he south of Africa. But two of the most important exhibits are from the Congo, the Bushongo carvings and the Ife bronze heads from Nigeria.
The National Museum, Accra also organizes temporary exhibitions which are conducted not only by the museum but also by foreign embassies and individuals. To facilitate the trip of the tourists guided tours are conducted along with films which are shown to give an idea about some aspects of he Ghanaian culture. This is shown by the Education Section. You can visit the National Museum, Accra every day between 9 o' clock in the morning till 5 o'clock in the evening. It remains all through the year except on the Christmas day.
