Cape Coast Castle is considered to be the fortification of Ghana. It was first constructed in timber. It was established in the year 1653. However, later it was again reestablished in stone. In the year 1663 the Danes had captured the Swedish gold Coast. In the year 1664 British destroyed the Cape Coast Castle. The Committee of Merchants again reestablished it during the 18th century. It was established as a depot of storing the timber and gold and was also used as the main hub of trans-Atlantic slave trade. It was in the year 1920 that the castle was under the administration of British Public Works Department. In the year 1990s the Ghanaian Government restored the Government.
