Lake Bosumtwi, Kumasi is the largest freshwater lake in the beautiful country of Ghana. It is situated 40 kilometers south-east of the city of Ghana in West Africa. One of the major Tourist Attractions in Kumasi, Lake Bosumtwi, Kumasi is positioned within an ancient meteorite impact crater. It is approximately 8 kilometers across and the only natural lake in Ghana.
The Lake Bosumtwi in Kumasi is a popular recreational area and every year, large numbers of tourists and travelers visit the city. There are about 30 villages near the lake, with a population of about 70,000 people. The Ashanti people consider Bosumtwi to be a sacred lake.
According to a traditional belief, the souls of the dead come to the Lake Bosumtwi to bid farewell to the God Twi. Because of this, it is considered permissible to fish in Lake Bosumtwi only from wooden planks. The Lake Bosumtwi impact crater is 10.5 kilometers in diameter and is slightly larger than the present lake. It is estimated to be 1.07 million years old.
Lake Bosumtwi, Kumasi is located in south-central Ghana and is the only true inland lake in the country. It has no surface outlet and is supposed to be formed either by volcanic eruption or by the impact of a meteorite. With an area of 19 square miles and a depth of 230 to 240 feet, this fine and beautiful Lake Bosumtwi is fed by small streams that tumble down the steep sides.
The crater within which the lake is located has been partly eroded, and is situated in a dense rainforest. There is lush green vegetation all round the lake.
Drilling of the crater's central uplift beneath the lake floor has recently provided an abundance of shocked materials for scientific study. Scientists are not sure as to how the Lake Bosumtwi at Kumasi was formed. Many kinds of fishes are found in the lake. It is really a lovely scenic place to arrange a trip.
