The late Dr. Kyerematen saw and realized that Ghana's rich cultural heritage was slowly getting destroyed by the influence of foreign culture. Hence, there was an urgent need to protect and preserve the Ghanaian culture in a more concrete and monumental forms by establishing museums, craft villages and cultural centers.

This is how the National Cultural Center, Kumasi came into existence. Prempeh II and the Asanteman Council supported Dr. Kyerematen's efforts and it gave birth to the 'Cultural Center' which was then christened as the "Ashanti Cultural Center".

The name Ashanti Cultural Center remained so until the year 1963. Later, the name of the Center got changed to Ghana National Cultural Center, when Dr. Kwame Nkrumah took the initiative of changing its name being influenced by nationalism and patriotism.

Today, the Kumasi Center is called the Center for National Culture or the National Cultural Center. The Center tries to preserve and showcases the rich cultural art and sculptures of Ghana. The Center, at present, is well-maintained by an expert team of trained and skilled professionals

The National Cultural Center is just a 10 minutes walk west of the market. This fascinating museum displays all about the Ashanti history. There is a popular library, an excellent crafts shop and an exhibition hall, located here. You can also participate in traditional dance and drumming classes that are available in National Cultural Center.

One of the Center's more interesting exhibits is the fake golden stool that was used to trick the British, who tried to take it. The real stool is kept at the Manhyia Palace and is brought out only on special occasions.

The Directorate is made up of the Director, Deputy Directors and a Chief Accountant along with a dedicated and committed staff. The National Cultural Center in Kumasi has won many prestigious awards and is a hot-spot for the tourists to Ghana.
