One of the Tourist Destinations in Ghana is Elmina. The town is one of the places for Sightseeing in Ghana. The country of Ghana is situated in West Africa. This Ghanaian Attraction is well known for its different activities. Elmina is located on a south-facing bay on the Atlantic Ocean coast. It lies west of Cape Coast and was the first European settlement in West Africa.
The population of this small town is around 20,000. Elmina grew around São Jorge da Mina Castle. This castle was built by the Portuguese Diogo de Azambuja in 1482. The castle was Portugal's West African headquarters for trade of African wealth. Though the original Portuguese interest was gold, it later expanded into a slave trade. Thousands of slaves were traded through the trading post of Elmina.
The location of Elmina was very convenient, which made re-provisioning the ships easy. All these ships sailed to India via the Cape of Good Hope. In 1637 Elmina in Ghana was captured by the Dutch West India Company. Later the town was used mostly for slave trade. Until 1872, Elmina remained in Dutch hands and after that it was sold to the English. A number of Attractions in Elmina can be seen, like the Fort St Jago which was built by the Dutch in 1666.
