Kumasi, popularly known as "The Garden City", is one of the renowned Tourist Destinations in Ghana. Located in the Rain Forest Region of Ghana, the charming city of Kumasi is approximately 300 miles north of the Equator and 100 miles north of the Gulf of Guinea.
History
There is obvious evidence that the area around Kumasi, Ghana has been kept cleared since the Neolithic age. The city rose to fame in 1695 when it became the capital of the Ashanti Confederacy due to the activities of its ruler Osei Tutu. Parts of Kumasi, Ghana along with the Royal Palace were destroyed by the British troops in the 4th Anglo-Ashanti War of 1874.
Population
With a population of 1,517,000 (according to 2005 census), Kumasi is the 2nd largest city in the country. The largest ethnic group is the Ashanti.
Economy
Due to large gold deposits, Kumasi has been among the wealthier cities in Ghana. The chief exports are hardwood and cocoa. Kumasi has 50% of the timber industry in Ghana.

Kumasi, Ghana is served by Kumasi Airport and railway lines to Accra and Takoradi. Public transit in the city is provided by a combination of privately owned Mini-buses or Tro-Tros, taxis and buses.
