The city of Sunyani is surrounded by the lush Southern Ashanti Uplands. During the 19th century, the city rose as an outpost camp for elephant hunters. The name Sunyani is derived from 'Osono' which is the Asante word for elephant. The British colonial government designated Sunyani as a district headquarters in 1924. Sunyani in Ghana became an important center for the distribution of kola nuts, cocoa and staple foods such as maize and yams after the construction of a road connecting city of Kumasi.
On 13th July 1974 the Sunyani airport was opened and has flights to the Kumasi, Accra and Takoradi airports. The city can be reached from Accra by a first-rate highway within seven hours. The Attractions in Sunyani include several areas of pristine natural beauty. Other attractions which should be visited are the Cocoa House, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, and Sacred Heart Church and the Cocobod house. Lying in close proximity to Sunyani, are other attractions like the Kintampo waterfalls and the Boabeng monkey sanctuary in Fiema.
