Greece

Greece is one of the historic locations which have become widely popular among the international travelers who come to spend their long awaited vacation in this part of world. Greece is located in South Eastern Europe and is situated on the Balkan Peninsula.

From the geography of Greece you would come to know that Greece shares its border with Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey. The country has a huge coastline. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of Greece. To the west of Greece you will find the Ionian Sea.Greece has a rich heritage and dates back to the period of Byzantine Empire. From the history of Greece you would come to know that this country is considered as the cradle of western civilization and is known for hosting the Olympic Games. It has an eventful history and contributes largely to the European culture.

Greece witnessed the surfacing of one of the ancient civilizations in Europe. It was during this time when Europe reached the heights of prosperity and underwent a cultural boom under a typical democratic set up. The ancient empires of Athens and Sparta led the way to glory against the Persian Empire. But later they were over shadowed by the Thebes and eventually by the Macedonians. Later developments saw the supremacy of the Hellenistic era which eventually brought an end to the Rome rule over Greece in 146 BC.

Today it is one of the developed countries and has been a member of the European Union since 1981. It is also a member of the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union and NATO. Greece is mainly a mountainous country and is known for its diversified landscapes. It has quite a number of mountains and peninsulas. Moreover Greece has the tenth largest coastline in the world and stretches over 14880 kilometers. The geography of this country is quite intriguing.

The climate of Greece depends on the regions. The Pindus mountain range plays a significant role in the climate of the region. The three distinct types of climate are the Mediterranean, the Alpine and the temperate types. In the Mediterranean type of climate you will find mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The regions which are mostly affected by this climate include the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, Eastern Peloponessus and parts of the Sterea Ellada. The mountainous areas of north western Greece experience the Alpine type of climate. The Temperate climate affects the central Macedonia and East Macedonia.

Thus you can find that Greece is popular among the travelers for more than one reason.
