Transportation facilities in Crete ensure that the tourists visiting the island can move around the place with much comfort and ease. Crete is served by various modes of public transport. Public transportation network in Crete is well-knit.

There are three airports in Crete. These three airports are the Nikos Kazantzakis at Heraklion, the new public airport in Sitia and the military airport of Daskalogiannis at Chania. The airport in Chania is much smaller in size than the Heraklion airport. It is also not as busy as the Heraklion airport. At present, the Sitia airport serves to only a small traffic of the domestic flights that operate to and from Athens. Plans are being drawn up to replace the Heraklion airport. It is supposed to be replaced by the new inland airport at Kasteli. This airport will be located to the southeast of Heraklion.

The ferry service is also one of the essential modes of transportation in Crete. Ferries ply between Athens, Hania, Rethimno and Iraklion. Ferry service is also available between Thessaloninki, Cyclades and Heraklion. Public Transportation in Crete is served by the regular bus services. Buses are quite frequent and ply according to the timetables. The bus service plying along the north coast and the south coast are excellent in service as they are frequently available. A bus is also cheaper than the other modes of transport.

If you are planning to explore various parts of the island all by yourself, hiring a car is a good idea. If you have the driving license with you, renting a car is easy. Most of the gas stations close at around 7 in the evening and many of these gas stations are closed on Sundays and bank holidays. Thus, if you are planning to go out on the car on a bank holiday or a Sunday, make sure to fill the tank before that. These extensive transportation facilities in Crete make your holiday all the more enjoyable. The island of Crete is served by various cruises that are available on a daily basis. The cruises set off from different coastal towns and take you to the smaller islands like Thodorou, Dias, Chrisi, and so on.
