History of Greece

History of Greece dates back to times immemorial. Greece is considered as a cradle of one of the ancient civilizations in Europe. Greece is a country in Southeastern Europe situated on the Balkan Peninsula. It shares its border with Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey. To the east and south you will find the Aegean Sea while Ionian Sea lies to the west. History of Greece can be traced back to the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations-the famous human civilizations in Greece which are considered to be among the oldest human civilizations in Europe.

It was on the shores of the Aegean Sea where civilizations first emerged in Europe. Later the Greek city states emerged. It was during this time when there was a tremendous boom in the field of architecture, commerce, science and philosophy. Initially Athens and Sparta led the way to prosperity under a typical democratic set up in ancient Greece. A series of battles repelled the Persians and established Greek dominance under the Spartans. Later they were overshadowed by Thebes and finally the Macedonians took control. Under them the Greeks united under a common flag and earned their victory over the Persians. This was followed by the Hellenistic era. Finally the Roman rule was established over Greek lands in 146 BC.

The Roman Empire dominated Greece for a long and there is long history of the dominance of Roman and Hellenic culture in Greece. Later the Roman Empire fell at the hands of Ottomans in1453. During this era the Greek intelligentsia played a significant role in the western European renaissance. The military system during the Ottoman Empire played a significant role in the formation of modern Greece. The Ottoman Empire finally came down following the Greek War of Independence and an emerging Greece was recognized by the world under the London protocol. This led to the nomination of the first governor of the newly formed state. This governance did not last long and soon after his assassination powers were confined to Otto under monarchial governance. With the uprising in 1843 powers were handed over to the representative assembly.

After the First World War there was a bloody phase in the history of Greece. There was a series of encounters against the Turkey which finally ended with the Treaty of Lausanne an important landmark in Greek history. This was followed by greater political instability which also witnessed a civil war between the Royalist and the Communist forces. This political instability continued for a long time and finally in the year 1981 Greece entered the European Union.

History of Greece is quite intriguing and will take you through different phases of culture and tradition that has contributed largely in the making of modern Greece.
