The Ancient Agora



Athens is a place with a number of temples and religious places. The Ancient Agora, Athens is the most famous instance of agora, which is situated in Athens, Greece. The Ancient Agora, Athens had personal accommodation until it was restructured by the Peisistratus of 6th century BC. Though, he used to live on the agora himself, he removed the closed wells, other homes and made it the heart of Athenian government.

The Ancient Agora, Athens was the residential region during Roman and Byzantine times. There are several buildings and structures in the classical agora. The Ancient Agora, Athens had the Peristylar Court, Mint, Enneacrounos, South stoa, Heliaea, Strategeion, Colonos Agoraios, Tholos and Agora stone. You can also see a Monument of the Eponymous Heroes and Metroon Old Bouleuterion. The Ancient Agora, Athens also includes New Bouleuterion, Temple of Hephaestus, Temple of Apollo Patroos, Stoa of Zeus, Altar of the Twelve Gods and Stoa Basileios. Temple of Aphrodite Urania, Stoa of Hermes and Stoa poikile are some other parts of this agora.

At the later period, The Ancient Agora, Athens had some additions in its constructions. They were mainly done in the 2nd century. The Middle stoa that was set alongside the sanctuary in front of the Heliaea was a draw of this site. A small Roman temple was contributed in front of the Middle stoa. An Altar of Zeus Agoraios, The Temple of Ares and The Odeon of Agrippa were added to this place. The contemporary excavation of The Ancient Agora, Athens was started under the guidance of T. Leslie Shear, who was the senior of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. After the original stage of excavation, which was done in the 1950's, part of The Ancient Agora, Athens was decorated and the Stoa of Attalos was refurbished to act as museum and work space.
