The Achilleon Palace, Corfu Island, is a magnificent structure, which is located in the beautiful village named Gastouri. This is the palace of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, named Princess Sissy.
The Achilleon Palace in Corfu Island was constructed in between the year 1890 and 1892. The massive building was constructed in neoclassical fashion. It has got a ground floor and there are two more storeys that are very beautifully decorated and furnished with a number of paintings and statues. The large gardens that encircle the entire building, stretches very far to the coastal roads. The gardens give very beautiful view of the whole island. The garden is also very beautifully decorated with number of statues among which the famous ones are the two statues made out of bronze. One of the statues is of the dying Achilles who is a very well known mythological hero and the other one is the statue of the Achilles Triumphant.
Inside the building, at the main entrance there is a chapel which has got very beautiful iconography. In the left side there is a big dining room that is made in Renaissance style. There is also a kaiser room and a smoking room as well which is done in Pompeyean style.
In the large reception hall of the palace, the visitors will come across some very interesting works of some popular artists. The most renowned work is the one done by Galopi who is an Italian painter. There is also a very large painting by Franz Matt, who is an Australian painter. This painting depicts Achilles who is dragging the dead Hector behind the chariot just before the walls of Troy. There are some beautiful items in this floor and also on the middle floor of the Achilleon Palace, Corfu Island.
