Old Fortress

Old Fortress, Corfu is one of the primary tourist attractions of the place. The island of Corfu has many heritage spots which depicts the rich cultural heritage associated with it. The Old Fortress, Corfu is one of the best places to be during Corfu Tours. The Old Fortress Corfu has an enriched history associated with it which goes back to the time of the 6th century A.D. The Old Fortress, Corfu stands in a very interesting location and is connected with the main town with the help of a bridge. The length of the bridge extends to 60 meters and it is entirely made up of iron.

The Old Fortress, Corfu was first fortified by the Goths who had compelled the entire population to take shelter under the two peaks which are found in its vicinity. During the period of the 6th and 13th century A.D the entire town of Corfu was lying within the fortifications of this ancient fort. During the 15th century, the Venetian people took siege of the place and renovated it by constructing walls and bastions around it. The bastions which were built by the Venetians were considered as masterpieces of military engineering.

The Old Fortress, Corfu also portrays a small harbor by the name of Mandrocchio in the northern side of it which were used by the Venetians as a place of anchorage for their ships. There is also an artificial canal by the name of Contrafossa which stands near the fort and serves as a sea moat.

The Old Fortress, Corfu is one of the architectural wonders of the island and also conveys a church by the name of St. George which was built by the British in the year 1840. The marble statue of the renowned field marshal Von Schulenberg stands on the outside of the fort. The statue was constructed by the Venetians in the remembrance of the General who had played an imperative role in the defense of the city from the control of the Turks in the year 1716. At first the statue used to stand in the interior part of the building and was then brought to its original position at a later time.
