Among the Tourist Attractions in Corinth, the Corinth Canal, Corinth is one of the finest and the magnificent sites in the city of Corinth. The Corinth Canal, Corinth is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. People from far and wide come to see this lovely Corinth Canal that has stood the taste of time. The Corinth Canal, Corinth cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland. The canal is 6.3 kilometers in length and was built between the year 1881 and 1893.

The first attempt to build a canal was by the tyrant Periander or Periandros, as he was popularly known as in 7th Century BC. However, due to some technical difficulties, the Corinth Canal, Corinth was not built at that time. Instead, a simpler and less costly overland stone ramp, named Diolkos was constructed. In AD 67, the philhellene Roman Emperor Nero ordered 6,000 slaves to dig a canal with spades. However, at that time also the canal was not worked out because of lack of time and money.

It was only during the beginning of 1870’s that the construction of Corinth Canal, Corinth was started. Corinth Canal is considered as a great technical achievement of its time. The canal has been of great help while traveling to Peloponnesus for the smaller ships and other water vehicles.Today, the Corinth Canal, Corinth is mostly used by the tourist ships and about 11,000 ships per year travel through the waterway. The depth of the Corinth Canal is 8 meters at low waters. The Corinth Canal, Corinth was cut through heavily faulted sedimentary rock in an active seismic zone.

The Corinth Canal was mainly built to serve the merchants and to allow the ships to travel to the other parts of the world. The canal was of a part of the economical aspect of the then period.
