It is believed as per Greek mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Apollo, the god of music, of truth and light and his twin sister Artemis is the goddess of hunting.
Apollo’s mother Leto was trapped into the charm of Zeus, just like several other goddesses, nymphs and mortals. When the wife of Zeus came to know about , Leto’s pregnancy, she prohibited her from dwelling in any part of the earth. In this way, she stopped her from giving birth at any place of the earth. The only place left for Leto now was to give birth in the small island of Delos, Mykonos which was then called Ortygia (Quail Island). Delos wasn’t considered as part of the earth. The fact was revealed by Poseidon, who came to the rescue of his brother and his beloved. The island thus gets its name ‘Delos’ which literally means “revealed”.
The islands around Delos were forming in a shape of a circle and the entire group of island came to be known together as the Cyclades. Delos, Mykonos is dedicated to the beautiful goddess and her twin children Apollo and Artemis. Delos, Mykonos was regarded as the most noteworthy Pan-Hellenic sanctuary from earlier times. The ancient Greeks constructed a number of exotic temples, sanctuaries and statues in this island, which is also regarded as the “Sacred Island”. Delos, Mykonos later came under the rule of the Ptolemies of Egypt and successors of Alexander the Great.
The Roman Period was the most prosperous and flourishing period for Delos, which became a major port. In the year 88 BC, the King of Pontos who was against the Romans completely destructed Delos, Mykonos. The archeological findings began in the year 1873 and are still carried out by the French School of Archaeology. It is recognized world heritage site.
