Geological Museum



The Geological Museum, Naxos is one of the significant places of attractions. Both the Geological Museum as well as the Museum of Natural History are located in Apirathos. While the Museum of Natural History houses a variety of flora and fauna, The Geological Museum, Naxos exhibits an excellent collection of fossils, minerals and rocks.

Apiranthos where the museum is located is called the “Marble Village” mainly because of the wide usage of marbles. Located all along the streets of Naxos you can see buildings made of marble. The construction of the museum started in the year in 1964. The Geological Museum was planned to be located in the local school. But the process of construction received a severe jolt in 1967. Construction began again in the year 1987 because of the attempt of Manolis Glezos. Presently it is located in a close proximity to the Archaeological Museum.

The Geological Museum, Naxos displays a rich collection. There are over 2000 exhibits housed in the Museum. You can many types of stones, minerals and fossils. All these were found on the island at the time of several excavations. Visitors can also see a major part of Manolis’ personal collection. The entire collection is known as ‘Petros Protopapadakis Geological Collection”. There are also different fossils set on display for the public. the bones of the dwarf elephant that inhabited Naxos about 70,000 years ago is one of the prime attraction.

In addition to rocks and stones found at Greece, you can a handsome collection of stones found all over the world. One of the most famous displays of the Naxos Geological Museum is “emery”. It is a hard rock of dark color. It is held to be the most precious metal in Naxos. You can see large amounts of these rocks at the museum. The metal was widely used in past days to construct tools used for processing stones. Other exhibits include obsidian blades from Milos and pumice from Santorini. The volcanic minerals from Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna as well as bauxite and cyanide from Brazil are also found here. Special attraction includes mineral rock from meteorites.
