Names of the gates
The eleven gates in Rhodes are as follows:

  • Pili Ekaterinis
The Pili Ekaterinis is the most impressive among all the 11 gates. It was built in 1478 and is located near the break-water that divides the primary commercial port from the harbor of Akti Sachtouri.
  • Gate of Agios Ioannis
The Aios Ioannis is located very close to the Diagoras football stadium.
  • Gate of Amboise
This spectacular gate is located towards the north-west of the old city. You will observe many painters at work here.
  • Eleftheria Gate
This is also called the “Liberty” Gate. It stands in front of Simi Square. The Archaeological Museum, Municipality Gallery and Decorative Arts lie in close proximity to it.
  • Panagia gate
This gate is located very near the commercial port.
  • Athanasiou Gate
If you want to go to the south of the old city, you can use this gate. The Church Sun Francisco is located very close to the gate.
  • Gate of Agia Ekaterini
  • Gate of the Naval Station
  • Gate of the Apostle Paul
  • Gate of Agios Athanassios
  • Navarhou Gate

    Where to start
As there are so many gates, you can begin from Navarhou Gate, which acts as the entrance to the commercial port. You may also enter the city through Eleftheria (meaning 'Liberty') Gate. The moment you enter through this gate, you will come to Simi Square, which is also called Plateia Simi. Simi Square contains the ruins of a 3rd Century temple of Aphrodite. Behind this temple, is a place which was used for the stay of the knights of Aiberne. This Lodge was constructed in 1507. Following that you will spot the Lodge of the Battalion of England, and then the hospital in which the Knights were treated. Grandmaster had constructed the latter in 1440. At present, the hospital serves as the Library of the Archaeological Society. The Archaeological Museum, which was established in 1916 and houses many relics, is present in this complex. So, as can be observed, the Eleftheria Gate acts as the most preferred entrance for the tourists who want to visit this wondrous city. You may then proceed to the gates that follow.

Rhodes Tourism features exploration of this beautiful city and visiting its many sites, The Gates of the old town, Rhodes being one. You can enter the old city, which is divided into two parts, namely Castello and Chora, through any one of these gates. Make your Rhodes tour a memorable one with a visit to this place.
