Valley of the Butterflies

The Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes is a major tourist attraction in Greece. The Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes is a biotope that is unique in the world and till today it has survived. So come to the Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes and enjoy as much as you like as it is indeed a different dimension.

Right through the Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes runs the river Pelekanos. This river is continuously fed by gushing, small waterfalls. You can easily find the gushing towards the western side of the island of Rhodes. It lies approximately five kilometers to the south east of the village of Theologos. The Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes is one of the most attractive destinations that you should not miss under any circumstance. During the month of August, thousands of butterflies of the genus Panaxia fly to the valley in order to reproduce. In the monsoon season the butterflies in their caterpillar stage remain in the Mediterranean thicket. This type of vegetation is best suited for their diet.

Towards the end of the wet season at the end of May, the butterfly comes in shape that is recognizable to all. These butterflies move constantly to the areas that have the highest levels of humidity as they always follow the "water ways". When the dry period comes they come to the valley. But over the last few decades the Panaxia has been constantly declining. This has happened due to several factors and the most important reason is the advent of too many tourists in the area and the disturbance caused. It is this disturbance that is forcing the butterflies to fly all day and they are losing on energy. Visitors are advised not to disturb these wonderful species but watch them silently. The Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes should not be missed.
