Zakynthos town is the capital city of the island with immense natural splendor and a rich and colorful history. Historically, the Zakynthos Town, Zakynthos was known as 'The Venice of the South'. It is also the commercial and cultural centre of the island. Most of the buildings that you will see here are of Venetian style which date back to many centuries when the island was under Venetian rule. In 1953, a massive earthquake and fire destroyed many of the original buildings of the island and the town was rebuilt preserving the Venetian and Byzantine style wherever possible. The design of the town remains generally the same as before the earthquake with a well-organized grid system rising up towards the hills inland.

Zakynthos Town, Zakynthos is regarded as the cultural center of the island as there are a number of well known museums here including the Museum of Byzantine Art. The museum has a rich collection of various ecclesiastical items, carved masterpieces, post-Byzantine icons screens, wooden artifacts, wood carvings dating back to the 16th century, reconstructed frescoes and more such items. Next, the Solomos Museum on Platia Ayiou Markou can be mentioned. It boasts of a collection of rare manuscripts by Dionyssios Solomos. The Museum of Zakynthos has a collection of local historical artifacts.

You can visit the ruins of the Venetian Fortress on the top of the hill in Zakynthos Town, Zakynthos. The Church of St Dionysios stands on the southern end of the town. The church has a large collection of icons representing the life of St Dionysios as well as his silver coffin. The building was one of the few survivors of the 1953 earthquake. The bell tower is modeled on that of San Marco in Venice. The Strata Marina or the Marine Drive is the busiest part of the Zakynthos Town in Zakynthos. This is the boarding point for the numerous passenger and car ferries to and from the island.
