The base on which this wildlife conservation center is located shares both, a large area of land and ocean. The park is centered in the south-western part of the archipelago of Bijagos. Joao Vieira e Poilao Marine National Park enjoys the wide reputation of being the most important nestling site for the marine green turtles. The park shelters 3 rare species of turtles, which are known as Chelonia Myda, Eretmochelys Imbricata and Lepidochelys olivacea.
A large number of these green marine turtles find their ways on the beaches and nestle on them. They lay eggs on these beautiful beaches. The spectacle provides a rare opportunity to the visitors to experience the lovely scenes.
Joao Vieira e Poilao Marine National Park of Guinea Bissau consists of 4 small sized islands in the north-east of the archipelago. The large area of ocean on which the park is sheltered is mostly excluded from the IBA. The area belonging to the north-east of the Orango complex includes the islands of Bubaque, Rubane, Soga and Canhabaque. Galinhas lies between Rubane and Bolama. Bubaque is considered as the main commercial and logistical seat of Bijagos.
Joao Vieira e Poilao Marine National Park shelters innumerable Palearctic waders which you will be able to see during the northern winters. After the Banc d’Arguin in Mauritania, the park is ranked high in sheltering such a huge number of Palearctic waders. It has been estimated that around 900,000 numbers of such birds visit the archipelago during the winters every year.
