Rio Cacheu, Guinea Bissau is blessed with one of the most expanded mangrove sites of the country. This natural park is located on the northernmost part of the rivers of Guinea Bissau. The wide area of the park shares both sides of the river and offers spectacular visual delights to the visitors. Rio Cacheu, Guinea Bissau is supposed to be one of the most celebrated natural parks of Africa and attracts a good number of admirers from across the world.

The Rio Cacheu, Guinea Bissau or the Rio Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park includes the strips from the town of Cacheu on the southern side. The northern part of this natural park is situated adjacent to the coast. The mangroves of the park are favorite breeding ground for different kinds of fish, crustaceans and molluscs.

The total vegetation of this natural park is expanded over an area of 54,400 hectares of land with deep concentration of mangroves, semi dry woodland and savanna. Another large area of the park consists of mud and sand-banks which are exposed at low tide. The northern part of Rio Cacheu in Guinea Bissau shelter one of the most extensive areas of mangroves in the country. Apart from offering useful breeding grounds to fish, crustaceans and molluscs, the park also provides shelter to a large number of birds.

mmany of the birds that are seen here are migratory birds. The birds take shelter in the park in particular seasons and fly from different countries of the world. According to a survey which was carried out in 1994, at least 180 species of bird were found seeking shelter in the Rio Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park.

The northern fringe of the Rio Cacheu, Guinea Bissau accommodates over 20 villages with a population of more than 7,000 people in them. People living in these villages belong to 6 ethnic groups which include Baiote, Ballante, Bahum, Cobiana, Felupe and Manjaque. The southern sector of the park features 14 villages accommodating around 800 people. These people belong to Cobiana and Manjaque ethnic groups. The park also features many sacred forests which are well preserved and revered by the people residing around.
