The Colonization Period
The first period in the History of Haiti was the colonial period. This period witnessed the colonization of Haiti by the Spanish and French. The King of Spain in 1609 ordered forces to encroach Santo Domingo, the capital of Haiti. As a result, the Dutch, British and French pirates also established their bases on the land, especially in the northern and western coasts, which were deserted otherwise. The French finally settled here in 1625, while they formally claimed to control the island in 1664. It called its new colony Saint-Domingue.
Revolution Period
The next period in the History of Haiti was the period of the slave rebellion of 1791. On August 22, 1791, the slaves in the north of Haiti revolted against their masters. Occupation by the US
Throughout the 19th Century, Haiti was ruled by several presidents, till in 1915, when the US invaded it. However, with the nationalist rebels, who waged a guerilla warfare under the leadership of Charlemange Peralte and Dominique Batraville, the US occupation finally ended in 1934.
The periods that followed in the History of Haiti were that of the Duvaliers (François Duvalier: 1957-71 and Jean-Claude Duvalier: 1971-86) and Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
