Geography: Ho Chi Minh City is situated very close to the delta of the Mekong River. The Saigon River flows towards the eastern region of the city. Hanoi is located in the northern side of Ho Chi Minh City. The neighboring regions of Ho Chi Minh City are Tay Ninh and Binh Duong in the northern side, Long An in the western side and Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau in the eastern side. The South China Sea also surrounds Ho Chi Minh City towards the southern region.
History: In the past Ho Chi Minh City was an important port in Cambodia. Then during the 16th century, Ho Chi Minh City came under the rule of Vietnam. Earlier it was also the capital city of Cochinchina’s French colony before the Vietnam War. In the year 1975, it was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City and before that it was popularly known as Saigon. Economy: Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most economically advanced cities in Vietnam. Some of the fast growing industries of the city are high-tech industry, food processing industry, electronic industry, light industries and so on. Trung Software Park and the Sai Gon Hi-tech Park are two very important Industrial Parks in Ho Chi Minh City among the 15 of the same kind. Ho Chi Minh City is also home to the first Vietnamese Stock Exchang, which was established in the year 2001. The city contributes almost 30% of the total revenue of Vietnam.
Administration and Government: Ho Chi Minh City is a municipality in Vietnam. The People's Council in this city consists of 95 deputies, who are elected. On the other hand the People's Committee consists of 13 members, who are appointed by the council itself.
Council is the head of the local government. There is no position called “Mayor” in Ho Chi Minh City. Rather here are two such positions. One is the Chairman of the People's Council and the other is the Chairman of the People's Committee.
Transport System: Travel to Ho Chi Minh City – Tan Son Nhat international airport is situated in the central region of the city. From this airport frequent flights fly to several other countries and states. Traveling in Ho Chi Minh City – Once you reach HoChi Minh City, it is very easy to travel within the city. Frequent buses run from he bus stations like Cholon Bus Station, Mien Dong Bus Station, Tay Ninh Bus Station etc to several places in the city. Besides that, you can also avail trains. Taxis are also there.
Society and Cultural Life: Ho Chi Minh City has developed a diverse and rich cultural atmosphere in Vietnam. Some of the cultural parks in the city are B?n Thành, Ḥa B́nh Theaters, Đ?m Sen Tourist and Cultural Park, Can Gio Eco beach resort Lan Anh Music Stage, Suoi Tien Cultural Park etc. Media is also very much developed here and perhaps also the most developed in Vietnam. There are total 5 daily newspapers are published in this city.
Educational Institutions: Educational atmosphere has developed a lot in Ho Chi Minh City. There are about 50 schools and universities in this city. The infrastructure for higher studies has also become stronger. Some of the primary universities are The University of Natural Sciences, The University of Polytechnic, The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, The International University, Faculty of Economics, University of Information Technology and so on. Some universities for higher studies are HCMC University of Pedagogy, University of Architecture, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Technical Education, University of Banking, University of Economics, University of Law, University of Transport, University of Medicine and Pharmacy etc.
