Aquincum Museum, Budapest is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Budapest. Aquincum was actually a city in the Roman times and the remains of this ancient city have been turned into an open-air museum. Aquincum Museum, Budapest is situated in the Óbuda district of northern Buda. The excavated ruins of this former Roman town lie 3 km to the north of Flórián tér.
History has it that the town was founded in the first century A.D. by the Roman army who occupied the region which is known as Transdanubia today. The military settlement was situated on the site of today's Óbuda to the south of the Árpád Bridge. The civilian town Aquincum with aqueducts, sewers and paved streets, was surrounded by walls. Artisans, tradesmen and vine-growers populated the place before they left the city due to the repeated attacks of the Barbarians. The walls disappeared gradually and later, excavations unearthed the foundations of the city, which started around at the end of the eighteenth century and the various items are on display at Aquincum Museum, Budapest.
The most important monument here is the remains of the basilica of the Forum. The excavations have unearthed vast public baths beyond the east-west main road. Areas have been recognized as cashier's booth, dressing-rooms and separate pools for cold, lukewarm and hot water. It is thought that the heating system was installed under the floor which was supported by columns and the baths were fed by a medicinal spring. The great market hall stood nearby and there was main part of another bath to the east. It was a swimming pool of 6 by 4.5 meters of area. A huge Roman-style dwelling-house with rooms opening out from a colonnaded courtyard, is to be found nearby.
The halls of Aquincum Museum, Budapest display the most precious finds which were discovered during the excavations. The carved stones on exhibition are remains of altars and statues of gods. You will find here interesting items like sigillata vessels and bronze statuettes which came to Pannonia from different parts of the Empire. These items include a beautiful bronze representing a black slave-boy. There is a hall reserved for the relics of handicrafts and trade which include a wooden casket and a potter's kiln.
